The Karate Five founders and their commmitment have not failed their vision for this organization as their indomitable spirit is reflected by the respect and passion for the martial arts which has been passed on to its students.
"Let my Spirit be Protected by the Knowledge of the Martial Arts"
WELCOME TO THE KARATE FIVE DOJO - WHAT WE OFFER OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF
TOURNAMENT, SEMINAR & SPECIAL EVENT FEES & EXPENSES: K-5 tournament and seminar participation can range as far away as New York, Pennsylvania, up and down the East coast and anywhere in Tennessee. K-5's biggest annual trip is to Pennsylvania--where K-5 contributes $1500 or more for the leased bus and parents/guardians pay the remaining expenses. Tournament fees sponsored for underprivileged students may range from $45-$75 a tournament but K-5 normally sponsors from 1 to 15 students at any given tournament.
CLOTHING/UNIFORMS/GI's: Clothing for students especially children and youth-sponsored students and but are not necessarily limited to tee shirts and Gi's (uniforms). These items can cost as little as $15 to as high as $150 per person. To assist sponsored students, K-5 assists by purchasing these items from flea markets and consignment shops to help save dollars for the students. Training shoes are purchased at a discount and then provided to students at the same minimum discounted price.
MEMBERSHIP DUES/FEES: As a not-for-profit public charity registered as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in the State of Tennessee, K-5 strives to admit students into its martial arts program who genuinely want to learn the art. The standard membership due/fee is $40 a month and based on availability of each individual's or family's finances--ability or inability to pay. However, some families cannot afford the mere $40 monthly fee especially if more than one child from a family is enrolled. In these instances monthly fees are sometimes discounted or sponsored by K-5. We have quite a few students sponsored by individuals, the church or businesses.
INSTRUCTOR FEES: For K-5 Dojo to acquire qualified and well-trained instructors and Sensei to train our students, instructor fees are more often than not "waived" as well. Instructors and staff do not receive salaries.
In 2006, Karate Five was proud to have been chosen as the only civilian martial arts school ever accepted as a Military Arnis affiliate and to this date, we continue to support and participate in Arnis Military workshops.
Participation in the Military Arnis workshops requires the purchasing of specific equipment and occassionally traveling to Pennsylvania by staff, students and family members. On occassion the workshops have been facilitated by Professor Lisa McManus or Grandmaster Jeff Delaney of Hawaii at the Knoxville or Morristown, Tennessee dojos. Because of Karate Five's desire to remain a non-profit organization since 1975, our students have been able to continue participating in many of the numerous workshops, tournaments, IHOF and WKU annual events due to the generosity of donors, partners and supporters.
Maintaining the vision of our mentor, Grandmaster Harold Long, on May 1, 2007, Karate Five's Grandmaster Willie Garfield Wilson committed to the Issinryu Cross-Training Alliance. This alliance allows our staff and students to further the dedication of the practice of Isshin-Ryu and the broadening of those skills and knowledge through the study of additional martial arts and disciplines.
Benefits of the alliance members go to support the Harold Long Foundation.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONING & TRAINING
Karate Five's organizational structure designed its martial arts programs not only for physical conditioning and training but also to promote disciplined mental, spiritual and moral development--an asset strongly encouraged in each of our students.
(Above) Sensei Linda Wilson demands a rigourous workout from students before martial arts training.
(Above) Students meet the challenge of Sensei Wilson's physical conditioning and strengthening routines.
Training and physical conditioning is an integral part of Karate Five's martial arts program. Large heavy mirrors cover the East Wall and are used in the dojo training room for free-style training. Mirrors represent a very important role in martial arts training because mirrors allow our students with the self-evaluation process of his/her skills and the level of their ability to promote excellence.
Other equipment included in training are (2) male training mannequins, training equipment, a Chuck Norris Total Exercise Gym, (2) Multi-Purpose Gym Sets, stretch machine, and treadmill. Other smaller accessories and equipment include several sets of dumb bells, deadweights with benches, water bags and speed bags.
"Teaching our children martial arts, spirituality and discipline to become role models in their community."
